1st TRAINING ACTIVITY

MAASTRICHT, THE NETHERLANDS

21-27 JANUARY 2018

The Maastricht Graduate School of Governance was the host of the 1st Learning, Teaching & Training Activity for the HESTIA project that took place in the Netherlands from the 21st to the 27th of January 2018. 14 representatives from the partner schools travelled to Maastricht to participate in the 5-day training event titled "Workshop for teachers in diverse classrooms".

The very interesting training program included the following sessions:

  • Introduction to migration studies, by Prof. Melissa Siegel

  • Introduction to migrant integration, by Veronika Fajth

  • The role of schools in integration, by Prof. Melissa Siegel

  • Accommodating migrant students: the Dutch model, by Nancy Nicolson & Birgitte Kroon-van Soest

  • Challenging stereotypes and prejudices, by Ayla Bonfiglio, Atif Rizvi, Frank Ubachs (CELL Laboratory)

  • Preventing and dealing with bullying, by Dr. Loek Schoenmakers

  • Achieving social cohesion in diverse classrooms, by Prof. Martine Delfos

  • Mental health issues faced by migrant and refugee students, by Prof. Martine Delfos

Also, the representatives visited 3 schools in Maastricht: the international schools United World College (www.uwc.org) and ISK-EOA (iskmaastricht.weebly.com), and also the primary school OBS De Regenboog (www.obsderegenboog.net), to view and learn about their integration methods.
